Kent County Arts and Entertainment Events - August 2014

Kent County has been recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council as one of the significant arts communities in the state. With this in mind, we have designed the Arts & Entertainment site to provide you with information on what the county has to offer in relation to its arts, entertainment, and cultural heritage. Hopefully, this will help you plan a fun-filled stay, enabling you to take full advantage of places to go and people to see.   • The legendary Houston Person carves a hard groove with his tenor sax, a growling blues and soul style all his own. A veteran of more than 75 albums, he is one of the greats--“an eloquent messenger from a jazz era rooted in traditional blues, black church music, Broadway love songs…” (The Guardian) With the Redd Brothers Quartet featuring Chuck on vibes and drums and Robert on piano.   • Led by Kent County's own Mike McBride on electric bass, the band offers classic rock with a focus on hits of the '50s, '60s and '70s.   • This new Mainstay series encourages established musicians to explore new areas and journeymen to expand their skills, their repertoire and generally to take it to the next level. For this free concert, veteran jazz pianist Dick Durham has been working with Mainstay founder Tom McHugh on a concert of jazz from the 20th Century American Songbook for piano and chromatic harmonica.   • Actors of all ages needed for this dramatization of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. Directed by Tess Hogans. Although many of the roles are male the casting will be non-gender specific. All are welcome! Auditions will be held August 12, 14, and 16.

  • An accomplished fingerstyle guitar virtuoso adept at blues, rags and country picking, Toby Walker has a knack for improvisation, is a skilled singer and songwriter and is a masterful storyteller with a wicked sense of humor. He always leaves his audiences standing, hollering for more. Last year’s recording “What You See is What You Get.” has been hailed as a shining example of a traditional blues recording.   • There will be a parade that will start at 6:00pm at the site of the old Uptown Club, corner of College and Calvert Streets. It will proceed to the corner of High Street and Lawyers Row where the judges stand will be. DJ Stansbury will play doo-wop music there. At 7:00 Music in the Park will present there Quiet Fire, live. Bring your chairs if you can! Music and dancing in the street, with food and drink provided by vendors will continue until 11 pm. Free and open to all: kids and families especially invited.

  • Hakeme, the Oriental technique of applying white slip with a brush made of straw allowing the slip to be applied thickly, and Sgraffito, the technique of scratching through an applied slip layer to reveal the color of the body beneath, will be explored in this day-long workshop. A leather-hard slab will be provided for each participant, but participants are encouraged to bring their own leather-hard pot to decorate. All other materials will be provided.   • Kent Massive continues its quest to bring together diverse artists and audiences in a small town on Maryland's Eastern Shore. This year's lineup includes everything from hip-hop to heavy metal, post-punk to neo-soul. In addition to a vast array of local Kent County talent, the main stage will welcome Akoko, an avant-garde hip-hop duo from Washington DC who have recently been covered in The Source and performed at the NXNE festival in Toronto. The theater lobby will also host the work of several visual artists and photographers from the area.
