Kent County Arts and Entertainment - July 2013

Kent County has been recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council as one of the significant arts communities in the state. With this in mind, we have designed the Arts & Entertainment site to provide you with information on what the county has to offer in relation to its arts, entertainment, and cultural heritage. Hopefully, this will help you plan a fun-filled stay, enabling you to take full advantage of places to go and people to see.   • Three of the brightest young women in jazz: SharÛn Clark, a sultry, bluesy vocalist; Nicki Parrott, a premier bassist and dynamic swinging vocalist; Bria Skonberg, a rising star on trumpet whose singing can be sweet or smoky as the mood requires; work together for the first time!   • Tim Sparks is an extraordinary fingerstyle guitarist whose blending of musical styles has won him extensive praise. Guitar Player Magazine calls his music "Fresh, exotic, and totally cool." Acoustic Guitar Magazine calls it "rich and sensuous", and guitar wizard Leo Kottke says "He's really one of the best musicians I know." This will be a stylish mix of traditional country blues, gospel, jazz, be bop, classical and world music. Call for reservations. Admission is $15.

  • Blues, jazz, gospel, the superb vocalist Karen Somerville sings it all with grace and emotion. For this evening she'll pull out some of her most memorable songs from her many musical projects. Joining her will be some of her favorite people to work with: her partners in Sombarkin, Lester Barrett, Jr and Jerome McKinney along with Stef Scaggiari on piano and Tom Anthony on bass.   • Located 8.5 miles south of Chestertown the one-room schoolhouse opened in 1878 to children of a farming and watermen's community. Visitors can see the potbellied stove, lessons on the blackboards for the seven grades taught there, schoolbooks and other artifacts of that era. Closing in 1939 it remains in its original configuration. No admission fee.

  • Jazz standards, originals and bossa nova from Devin Arne, an internationally in-demand guitarist, composer and producer who is a past recipient of the Charlie Byrd Memorial Scholarship at Peabody and pianist Todd Simon, a Peabody graduate and member of the Naval Academy Band. This guitar/piano concert is part of the Mainstayís series featuring recipients of the Charlie Byrd Memorial Scholarship at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University.   • A program of Schubert, Shostakovich and Beethoven from a young remarkably talented string quartet. The Dover Quartet (formerly Old City String Quartet) formed at Curtis Institute of Music in 2008, when its members were just 19 years old and was the winner of the 2010 Fischoff Competition. While honoring the musical lineage of the Vermeer and Guarneri Quartets, Dover brings its youthful enthusiasm and musical conviction to the repertoire. Call for reservations. Admission is $15.
