Kent County Arts and Entertainment - July 2014

Kent County has been recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council as one of the significant arts communities in the state. With this in mind, we have designed the Arts & Entertainment site to provide you with information on what the county has to offer in relation to its arts, entertainment, and cultural heritage. Hopefully, this will help you plan a fun-filled stay, enabling you to take full advantage of places to go and people to see.   • The Chesapeake Brass Band is comprised of over 30 musicians playing cornets, trombones, tubas, euphoniums, and baritone horns. The band performs marches, patriotic songs, and big-band tunes. In 2013, the Chesapeake Brass Band 2013 won First Place in their division in the North American Brass Band Association Competition. Bring something to sit on as seating is limited.   • The notable jazz pianist, Bill Mays joins up with bassist Tommy Cecil to continue the great tradition of piano/bass duos. Sondheim's wonderful tunes are rarely heard in an instrumental jazz setting but Mays and Cecil present them with creative and appealing arrangements and wonderful jazz improvisations that reveal fresh nuances and put these masterful compositions in a new light. Dedicated to Stephen Sondheim Admission is $15. Call for reservations.

  • A free concert on the back deck behind the Mainstay. “If this music doesn’t make you smile, nothing will!” The Philadelphia Jug Band has a goodtime mix of country blues, folk and stomps on guitar, vocals, harmonica, flute, washtub bass, jug, washboard and blues kazoo. Originally inspired by the Jim Kweskin Jugband at the Philadelphia Folk Festival more than 50 years ago, they’ve been playing together ever since. Indoors if the weather doesn’t cooperate.
