Kent County Arts and Entertainment - March 2014

Kent County has been recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council as one of the significant arts communities in the state. With this in mind, we have designed the Arts & Entertainment site to provide you with information on what the county has to offer in relation to its arts, entertainment, and cultural heritage. Hopefully, this will help you plan a fun-filled stay, enabling you to take full advantage of places to go and people to see.   • A refreshing approach to traditional and more recently composed Celtic songs and instrumentals from the contemporary Irish and American band, RUNA. Their members draw on diverse musical backgrounds in world music, rock, and traditional and contemporary Irish and Celtic music and their repertoire combines spirited and graceful acoustic melodies, gorgeous vocals, and stirring instrumentals that fuse music from Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and the United States.   • Like the best early bluesmen, Guy Davis is, at heart, a storyteller, setting his intimate, richly nuanced tales to stomping acoustic blues backing. A singer and guitarist in the rural mold of Robert Johnson or Mississippi John Hurt, he brings the traditions of acoustic blues to life through the material of the great blues masters, African American stories, and his own original songs, stories and performance pieces.   • Encore Chorale will hold their 7th Maryland Summer Chorale Institute for singers age 55+ from June 15-19 on the campus of Washington College in Chestertown. Encore is the largest choral program for older adults in the US and this institute will attract singers from around the country. All are welcome and singers may be seated for rehearsals and performance. After 5 days of rehearsal, the chorale will perform a free community concert on June 19 at 2pm in the Gibson Center on the Washington College campus.

  • This free-admission program, about one hour in duration, will appeal to listeners of all ages. The ESWE is an all-ages community concert band based in Chestertown and is directed by Dr. Keith Wharton. New members are welcome to join at any time, without audition or fee.

  • Guitarist Michael Chapdelaine dazzles and surprises audiences with breathtaking technique, brilliant unexpected arrangements of familiar tunes and the poetic magic of his original compositions. His performances include blues to Bach to country to rhythm n' blues on classical and steel string guitar.   • Legendary Scottish singer and songwriter Archie Fisher and Garnet Rogers, the charismatic Canadian singer and songwriter, are great fans of each other’s work but joint tours are rare and wonderful. Archie’s melodic songs seem to come from deep within the lives of others and the Scottish landscape. Garnet’s songs are optimistic, extraordinary stories of less than obvious heroes and the small victories of the everyday. Both are stellar guitarists. Admission is $20. Call for reservations.
