Kent County Arts and Entertainment Events - May 2013

Kent County has been recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council as one of the significant arts communities in the state. With this in mind, we have designed the Arts & Entertainment site to provide you with information on what the county has to offer in relation to its arts, entertainment, and cultural heritage. Hopefully, this will help you plan a fun-filled stay, enabling you to take full advantage of places to go and people to see.   • Roy Book Binder plays guitar and sings on an eclectic mix of blues, country tunes, bluegrass, folk, and popular songs that originated on Tin Pan Alley. He has with a great bluesy voice, a polished fingerpicking style and his vivid, humorous stories about his mentor, the Rev. Gary Davis and other blues masters are just as good as his songs.   • World reknown Ken Cowan will perform an organ concert at Emmanuel Church. A "favorite son" of Emmanuel Concert Series devotees, Ken will appear for the eighteenth time at Emmanuel.   • Jazz pianist Bill Mays joins up with bassist Tommy Cecil to continue a great tradition of piano/bass duos with their new recording 'Side By Side Sondheim Duos.' Sondheim's wonderful tunes are rarely heard in an instrumental jazz setting. Mays and Cecil present them in a new light with creative and appealing arrangements, excellent jazz improvisations that reveal fresh nuances in these masterful compositions. Admission is $15.   • Free Band Concert by the local community concert band, directed by Dr. Keith Wharton, will present a program with a theme of "A Night at the Opera." Familiar and favorite parts of numerous operas (such as "Die Meistersinger," "The Magic Flute," "The Impresario," "Il Trovatore," "Aida" and more) will be included.

  • A parade down Main Street USA, demonstrations of colonial life, historic reenactments, 5K & 10K distance runs, a wild & creative raft race, over 100 arts & crafts vendors, local musicians & food galore are all among the reasons this Memorial Day Weekend event is one of the great traditions on the Eastern Shore.
