Kent County Arts and Entertainment - April 2015

Kent County has been recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council as one of the significant arts communities in the state. With this in mind, we have designed the Arts & Entertainment site to provide you with information on what the county has to offer in relation to its arts, entertainment, and cultural heritage. Hopefully, this will help you plan a fun-filled stay, enabling you to take full advantage of places to go and people to see.   • Sheri Wilner has twice been a co-winner of the prestigious Heideman Award granted by the Actors Theatre of Louisville: in 1998 for Labor Day, which premiered at the 1999 Humana Festival, and in 2001 for Bake Off, which premiered at the 2002 Humana Festival. Bake Off was heralded by The New York Times for being a “barbed, witty, thoughtful, giggle and snort inducing satire on gender roles” that was “the clear apex” of the festival.

Concerts are sponsored by the Department of Music of Washington College. New Morse Code is devoted to bold and engaging performances of music worth sharing. Omnivorous, rigorous and inventive, Hannah Collins and Michael Compitello activate the unexpected range and unique sonic world of cello and percussion.

  • Southie, the Boston neighborhood, where a night on the town is bingo, people live from pay check to pay check, and Margie Walsh just lost another job. Facing eviction and looking for a break, she thinks an old fling might be her ticket. But is this self-made man able to face his humble beginnings?   • Nick Saia on jazz guitar is the recipient of the Charlie Byrd Memorial Endowed Scholarship at Peabody. He will be joined by Corey Garcia on drums and Alex Fournier on bass for an afternoon of standards from the Great American Songbook, some great works from the 60s and a few originals.   • Fourteen year old trumpet phenom Geoff Gallante deserves a lot of attention for the quality, depth and emotion of his playing. He returns to the Mainstay as a leader with his quartet featuring some of D.C.'s finest rhythm players: Robert Redd on piano, Tommy Cecil on bass and Lenny Robinson on drums. This will be an evening of great straight-ahead jazz, hard swinging standards and a twist of bop. Admission is $20. Call for reservations.

  • Artists from all over the east coast arrive in Chestertown for four days of painting the historic streetscapes, colorful Farmers Market, beautiful Chester River, and surrounding rural landscapes of Kent County. The Sixth Annual Paint the Town is the premier plein air event sponsored by RiverArts.

  • Mark your calendars, make your reservations for the folk-pop mayhem of Trout Fishing in America! They play what they describe as “music for people who take their fun seriously,” folk/pop enriched by the diverse influences of reggae, Latin, blues, jazz and classical music and laced with humor and impeccable comedic timing.   • The Wet Paint Show and Sale on Saturday, April 25 is the culmination of the first three days of Paint The Town the Kent County area. A reception opens at 5:30 and is free of charge to the public. However, patrons who have paid $25 will be invited to the Patron’s Preview reception at 5:00, giving them first choice of the paintings, and a chance to meet the artists in a smaller gathering.
