  • This is the day that the celebrated historic houses of Chestertown open their doors! Over three centuries of American architecture are reflected in the homes and buildings of this charming historic river port, once a center of international Colonial trade. This is one of the oldest regional house tours; join visitors from throughout the Mid-Atlantic as they stroll through the streets of a community named by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the nation’s Distinctive Destinations, touring a dozen or more historic houses and properties. Enjoy a traditional Eastern Shore lunch at historic Emmanuel Church Hall, the seat of the Episcopal Church in America. This year’s tour theme is The New Republic and the War of 1812, as ticket holders step back in time in properties that stood during this transformative period in history.   • One of the better kept secrets of the county is this school house, the last Kent County one-room school to remain in its original configuration. It served the farming and watermenís communities from 1878 to1939. It is the restoration and preservation project of the Port of Chester Questers based in Chestertown. The schoolhouse is graced with artifacts, including the lessons for grades 1 through 7 for the last day of the school that remain on the blackboard

  • The harbor and wharfs of Chestertown will be filled to capacity on the weekend of October 25-28, 2012 as ships from across the mid-Atlantic make their way up the Chester River to participate in the schooner SULTANA’s “Downrigging Weekend.” An annual festival that has become one of the largest “Tall Ship” gatherings on the East Coast, Downrigging marks the close of the SULTANA’s sailing season and the beginning of Downrigging for many of the region's traditional sailing vessels. The weekend will afford the public opportunities to view, board and sail on the assembled fleet of more than 40 historic vessels, including the KALMAR NYCKEL, PRIDE OF BALTIMORE, II, and Lady Maryland. The weekend also features an extensive wooden boat show, films, lectures, music, activities for children and more.

  • Departing and returning from Sultana's home port of historic Chestertown, Sultana's two and one half hour public sails is a great way to sail the Chester River onboard a traditional schooner. Passengers are encouraged to help raise the sails, steer using Sultana's seven-foot long tiller and explore the authentically reproduced crew's quarters below-decks.
