Welcome and Introductions
Approval of Board meeting minutes – Board members reviewed meeting minutes from the March 27, 2008 Board meeting. Leon Frison asked for a motion to approve the minutes. Jean Austin motioned and Linda Wilson seconded. Motion approved.
Executive Committee/Finance Committee – Executive Committee along with Finance Committee met with Governor’s Office for Children (GOC) on April 16, 2008 to discuss the approximate $70,000 in anticipated unspent funds. It was discussed that the unspent money would be transferred from the Extended After School program and use it towards a Substance Abuse Counselor position for the KCPS system.
Board Development Committee – Board Development Committee did not meet for the month of April. They’ve had members of the community expressing interest in becoming a Board member. The Board Development Committee is in the process of preparing a Board member description form to hand out to those interested.
Program Committee: Will be meeting after April 25th to go over the proposals received for the Community Enrichment Grants. After the decisions are made, there will be an email going out for a Board vote. If there is no response from a Board member, it will be counted as a yes. Leon Frison asked to motion a vote by email. Motion approved by all.
Director’s Report:
- CPA Contract Synopsis – The 3rd quarter reports are being reviewed.
- Drug Free Communities – The funds for Drug Free Communities are provided by Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Association (SAMHSA). This is a 5 year cycle which must be applied for each year.
- ASAC – ASAC’s Marketing Plan Committee along with Loblolly Productions are in the final stages of ASAC’s website.
- Post Prom – ASAC is a huge supporter of the Post Prom. Money for the Post Prom activities comes from the Drug Free Communities dollars. Post Prom activities will start on May 18th at midnight and go through till 5:00 a.m. They are still looking for volunteers.
- Youth to Youth (Y2Y) – This program is also supported with Drug Free Communities dollars. Y2Y will be sponsoring a guest speaker at Kent County High School on Monday, April 21st. The speaker’s name is Milton Creagh who comes to us with 24 years of experience in talking with troubled youth. Mr. Creagh is a motivational speaker who has spoken to kids all over the country as well as four other countries. There will be four presentations being held at the high school that day with one being held in the evening for parents.
- Truancy Diversion Grant – The Truancy Diversion Case Managers have started accepting referrals. So far, they have over 100 potential referrals. They have been working with the Kent County Public School system in providing a permission form for the parents to sign so the TDCM are able to work with the students. The TDCM’s will be purchasing t-shirts as an incentive for students who meet their milestone.
- Foster Care/Child Care/Mentoring Recruitment – The Department of Social Services has had 10 families enrolled in this program with only 2 weeks left of training.
- Community Enrichment Grants – Deadline for these grants are Friday, April 25th.
- Regional Initiative – The five LMB Offices; Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline and Dorchester Counties, have come together to discuss some unspent dollars statewide. They have come up with a plan to provide individual living services for youth between the ages of 14 and 21. There is a $400,000 initiative available, so they will be sending out RFP’s into the community.
- NOFA – Friday, April 18th is the deadline for applying for the NOFA grant. Ms. Edwards met with Camp Fairlee Easter Seals to go over some opportunities that would be suitable for this grant. Since there was no response from our lead partner we decided not to apply for this grant at this time. We have decided to put together a Planning Group that will come up with opportunities that will enable us to apply for this grant in the future.
- Systems of Care – This program develops services for parents and children to work together and build a more positive relationship. We have several people from different agencies participating in this training that will be held July 15th – 20th, in Nashville, TN.
- Needs Assessment – We are hoping to receive our Needs Assessment from Salisbury University June 30th.
- Community Center Authority – The Community Center has hired Whiting Turner Construction as their Construction Manager for the Community Center project.
Calendar of Events:
April 16, 2008 – Plant the Promise will meet at the Commissioners Office for a photo. There will be kids from the Judy Center and the Kent Family Center participating in this event. April is Alcohol Awareness month.
May 2, 2008 – 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. The Judy Center will be having a Block Party at the Garnett Elementary School. The LMB will be participating in this event. We will be providing a Karaoke machine for the kids to sing-along.
May 3, 2008 – 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Worton Elementary School will be having their annual Spring Fling. The LMB will be participating in this event as well providing the kids with a sand art craft.
Board Involvement:
Kerry Ahearn-Brown, Director of Social Services, has hired a consultant for their Family Center Practice.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, Kerry Ahearn-Brown, will be writing a letter to the editor that will be published in the Kent County News. She is asking for signatures to help support the letter.
Jean Austin handed out a flyer in regards to a Personal Finance Seminar for Professionals. It will be held May 14th-16th, 2008 @ the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis.
Motion to adjourn meeting was approved at 5:45 p.m.
