What
is SASS?
SASS stands for Students Against Starting Smoking.
SASS is an after school club sponsored
by the Kent County Board of Education and the Kent County Health Department
Tobacco Prevention Program.The club has been in existance since 1994.
Who
can join SASS?
Any Kent County middle school student can join SASS.
Each middle school has its own club which meets monthly after school.
What if your school doesn't
have a SASS Club?
If your school doesn't have a SASS Club, please let your principal know
that you are interested in helping to start a SASS Club at your school.
What
do you do in SASS?
In SASS we learn about tobacco and the dangers of tobacco
use. We educate others about the dangers, and help our peers to avoid
the pressure to use tobacco. Throughout the school year, we participate
in various projects that have an anti-tobacco theme.
What
kind of anti-tobacco projects?
SASS groups have been involved in many projects and
events over the years. Some of things we have done included:

Schoolwide asemblies featuring guest speakers including:
Steve Fitzhugh, a former football player for the Cleveland Browns,
who relates his experiences in the NFL along with his personal experiences
to encourage students to make healthy life decisions and to stay
tobacco free.

Festival of Trees
In 2004, the students decorated a tree with bees and flowers
with the theme "You And Me Can BEE Smoke Free" for which
they won first place.

|
Shorebirds
The students attended the Delmarva Shorebirds Tobacco Free Day at
the Ballpark. SASS Club distributed Tobacco Free newsletters written
by the club members. SASS members were invited on the field before
play for the National Anthem and to throw the first pitch. They
also took part in the 7th inning stretch on top of the Shorebird
Dugout.
