General info

Apotheosis Herb Farm, located in Chestertown on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, is the realized dream of Deborah and Heather Mizeur, two former Capitol Hill staffers who answered the call to return to nature.

Deborah is a clinical herbalist and nutritionist with a Master of Science degree in Herbal Medicine from the Maryland University of Integrative Health, where she is now on faculty.  Her love affair with plants goes back to her childhood, when she would emerge from the woods, arms full of flowers, beaming.  Deborah has always had a strong intuition about food as our primary medicine, understanding the importance of nourishing ourselves with wholesome, unprocessed foods grown in nutrient rich soil from heritage seeds.  She is passionate about conservation, particularly the native plants that are the primary link in our local food chain.

For Heather, Apotheosis brings her back to her Midwestern roots as the granddaughter of multiple generations of Mizeur family farms in rural Illinois.  As the farm’s groundskeeper, Heather spends a lot of her time on the tractor and in the woods.  This is a peaceful respite from her busy life as an activist on many progressive causes she championed as a former Maryland legislator and Democratic candidate for Governor.

Apotheosis is a Greek word meaning, “to elevate the God within,” and there is something magical about this land that helps to transform all who are touched by its medicine.  For the past three years, the Mizeurs have planted red clover as a cover crop to restore the soil’s nutrients and transition the land to organic growing practices.  In the Spring of 2015, they will plant their first crops of medicinal herbs to support Deborah’s private clinical practice (www.deborahmizeur.com).  Deborah will use these herbs to support the health of her clients and to make medicines, teas, lotions, salves, and other products that she will sell at local farmers markets.
