  • Joe Holt, impresario and accompanist for The Mainstay’s First Friday programs excels in arranging programs that mostly tap his rich history of jazz associates. For his October 6th show, Joe welcomes three of the mid-Atlantic’s favorite jazz personalities – Amy Shook on acoustic upright bass, Steve Silbert on tenor sax, Steve Abshire on guitar, with Joe on the piano. The group plays together throughout the region several times a year under the name the Sholbertshires (a loosely formed acronym of the players’ last names).

  • Did you ever want to learn how to use the Clay Extruder that lives inside the Clay Studio? Now's your chance! Join Paul Aspell in a one-day workshop and experience the process.

    This is a hands-on workshop. Everyone will complete a few clay projects to be bisque fired by the Clay Studio Staff, and glazed in a single color, if requested. Alternative glazing arrangements can be made during class. All pieces will be ready for pickup at the Clay Studio by October 28th.

    Paul Aspell has worked in clay for over 45 years and taught both high school and adult clay classes.

    James Allen Hall is the author most recently of Romantic Comedy. They are the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts, the Maryland State Arts Council, the Lambda Literary Foundation, the Texas Institute of Letters, the Fellowship of Southern Writers, Bread Loaf, Sewanee, and the University of Arizona Poetry Center. They direct the Rose O'Neill Literary House at Washington College, where they serve as Associate Professor of English and Editor of Cherry Tree, a national literary magazine.

    Prometheus Burning is a retelling of the classic story of Victor Frankenstein and his Creature. When Victor loses his mother and goes on an academic rampage trying to defeat death, he brings something completely anew into the world. But when he rejects his creation, he dooms himself and his loved ones to a slow death, wracked with grief and pain on all sides.
