FALL FIELD TRIP SCHEDULE – AUGUST-DECEMBER 2012
September 1 – (SATURDAY) – Beginner’s Bird Walk: 8:00 AM. Libby’s Nature Trail, Chestertown. We’ll take a leisurely pace visiting woodlands, fields, and small ponds looking for late-season breeding birds and early autumn migrants such as warblers, swallows & flycatchers. Two to three hours.
September 16 – (SUNDAY) – Field Trip: Fall Count. Full day. Help us count birds in as much of Kent County as possible in a single day; join a field party or cover your neighborhood anywhere in the county. Contact one of the leaders for more information.
September 29 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Bombay Hook NWR, Delaware. The salt marshes of Delaware Bay host large numbers of waterfowl, gulls, late shorebirds and raptors. All day, bring lunch.
October 14 – (SUNDAY) – Big Sit. A different kind of field trip: join us at the observation platform at Tubby Cove, Eastern Neck NWR, to help tally all the birds seen from this single location. Drop by any time from first light (when birds are most active) to mid-afternoon and stay as long as you’d like.
October 21 – (SUNDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center/ Horsehead, Queen Anne’s County. We will search the brush and woods for songbird migrants including sparrows, later warblers, and blackbirds, and the ponds and Eastern Bay for waterfowl, late herons and shorebirds. Full day, bring lunch.
November 18 – (SUNDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Kent County Waterfowl. Twenty or more species of ducks and geese migrate through or to Kent County. We will explore landings, small ponds, and Chesapeake Bay to see how many of them have arrived before Thanksgiving. Half day, bring snacks.
December 16 – (SUNDAY) – Lower Kent County Christmas Bird Count. Covers area from just south of Chestertown & Tolchester to Eastern Neck Island. Full day of counting, followed by count down dinner. Contact compiler Nancy Martin for area assignments or more information.
December 23 – (SUNDAY) – Chesterville Christmas Bird Count. Covers most of eastern Kent County & some of northern Queen Anne’s. Full day of counting, followed by count down dinner. Contact compiler Maren Gimpel at 912-660-1541 for area assignments or more information.
FALL 2012 MEETING DATES
Meetings are held at 7:30 pm on the second Tuesday of each month in Wesley Hall at Heron Point, off East Campus Avenue, Chestertown. Light refreshments follow the program. Later program topics are being finalized, the dates for the fall are:

SPRING FIELD TRIP SCHEDULE – JANUARY-JUNE 2013
January 5 – (SATURDAY) - Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Kick off your birding year with a half-day at Eastern Neck NWR for waterfowl, eagles, and winter land birds.
January 26 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Ocean City, Worcester County. Our annual search for winter specialties including gannet, sea ducks, alcids, gulls, Purple Sandpipers, and wintering songbirds. Full day. Dress warmly, bring lunch and warm beverages.
February 10 – (SUNDAY) – Field Trip: Winter Count. Full day. Join the field crew or count in your neighborhood, anywhere in Kent County. Contact one of the leaders for more information.
February 23 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Chesapeake Farms, Kent County. Wintering waterfowl, raptors, White-crowned and other sparrows. Half day, bring snacks.
March 9 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Talbot County. Early spring birding for waterfowl, raptors, sparrows and the occasional surprise. Bring lunch.
March 23 - (SATURDAY) – Field Trip: Owl Prowl. Meet at the Eastern Neck NWR Lodge at 7:00 PM. With cooperative weather, we hope this trip will bring us face to face with an owl or two after an introduction to local species and their calls.
April 6 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Dorchester County. Prime waterfowl and eagle country; potential for surprise migrants. Full day, bring lunch.
April 20 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Beginner’s Bird Walk, Eastern Neck NWR. In honor of Earth Day, we’ll spend the morning exploring several of the trails and overlooks, looking for a variety of migrants, from raptors to warblers. Half day, bring snacks.
May 4 – (SATURDAY) – Beginner’s Bird Walk, 8:00 AM. Andelot Farm, Kent County. By special arrangement with the owner, we’ll take a leisurely walk among wood margins, fields, and small ponds looking for spring migrants: swallows, warblers, vireos, sparrows. Half day, bring snacks.
May 11 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip: May Count. An all-day effort to census as much of Kent County as possible. Join a field party or count in your neighborhood. Contact one of the leaders for details.
May 18 – (SUNDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Delaware Bay Shorebirds and Horseshoe Crabs. The annual May gathering of northbound shorebirds including large numbers of Red Knot and Ruddy Turnstones in bright breeding dress, feeding on Horseshoe Crab eggs along the shores of Delaware Bay is a migration spectacle. We will visit the Delaware Bay shore from Prime Hook north to Mispillion Light; an area also good for coastal marsh birds, gulls and terns. Full day, bring lunch.
**Date to be determined – Field Trip, Bird Banding at Bluestem (Chino) Farm, Queen Anne’s County. A special trip planned as a follow-up to a program about grassland research and bird banding at the Chester River Field Research Station at Bluestem Farm. RSVP will be necessary.
