The Sheriffs Office of Kent County is currently accepting applications for one Deputy Sheriff. This is a full performance level position with rotating shifts. Must be a U.S. citizen, high school graduate/GED, 21 years of age, have excellent moral character, have no criminal background, and possess a valid drivers license. Beginning salary is $51,983, including all mandatory hours, with comprehensive benefits package including Law Enforcement Officers Pension System (LEOPS). Job Summary: Provides law enforcement patrols and responds to calls for assistance. The primary focus of the position is the safety and protection of County residents and visitors.

Essential Functions
Functions listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

-Patrols County roads, enforces traffic laws, manages vehicle accident situations, notes unusual incidents and responds to calls for assistance.
-Investigates criminal activity and traffic accidents.
-Serves court documents: warrants, summons, and subpoenas.
-Uses community policing skills to build trust within the community and create opportunities for sensitive and discreet public input.
-Provides courtroom security as needed.
-Assists EMS and fire personnel in emergency situations.
-Serves on special details.
-Performs other duties as required.

Supervision: The position reports to the Captain/Chief Deputy. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The employee is expected to perform or possess the following:

-Communications Skills: Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with other deputies and designated staff, county and state officials, other police agencies and community residents. Ability to write clearly and informatively; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, government officials and the public, especially victims of crime.

-Customer Service Skills: Represents the department professionally and effectively in both internal and external interactions. Manages difficult, emotional or challenging situations successfully. Treats others with respect and consideration regardless of cultural background, status, or position. Exhibits objectivity and openness to others views.

-Innovation and Change Management Skills: Responds positively to changes in procedures or equipment. Adapts behaviors in response to new or changing work situations. Presents ideas and information in a manner that is easily understood by coworkers and the public.

-Technical Skills: Working knowledge of Article 27, Annotated Code of Maryland; of the Motor Vehicle Code; what is probable cause; of those county ordinances which require enforcement by the Sheriff; of preventative maintenance for motor vehicles and firearms as well as restraining devices; of the geography of the county; of emergency care to the sick or injured. Effectively utilizes police radio and computer equipment. Ability to deal with persons displaying asocial and antisocial behavior; to write and complete concise reports; to deal with situations requiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness, and good judgment; to accurately interpret and properly enforce institutional rules and regulations; to remember names; and to learn rapidly so as to minimize the need for constant supervision.

-Computer Related Skills: Ability to work with the internet for basic research; Microsoft Office skills and use of law enforcement or criminal justice databases.

Additional Requirements, must:
-Be at least 21 years of age
-Be in residence or move into residence within twenty (20) miles of Chestertown, within ninety (90) days after appointment
-Have height in proportion to weight
-Be of excellent moral character
-Be able to pass a criminal background check (including polygraph test), urinalysis test, and psychological examination
-Be able to safely operate County vehicles
-Maintain the ability to execute Essential Functions while in this class

Education and Experience:
1.High school diploma required.
2.Six months to one year related experience.
3.Valid Maryland Class C Driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle record.
4.Maryland Police Training Commission certification required.
5.Firearms Qualification (Annual) required.
6.First Responder Certification required.
7.CPR/AED Certification required.
8.Radar Certification required.
9.Annual in-service training, 19 hours minimum required.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work is conducted in a variety of settings which can include potential interactions with violent, mentally or physically ill residents. Routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items and/or long periods of walking on rough surfaces, chasing suspects or sitting/standing tor long periods of time. Work requires special safety precautions, e.g. working around firearms, soiled materials, traffic accidents, chemical substances and work in adverse weather conditions. Protective gear may be needed.

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g. use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire regulations.
