Kohl Gallery and the Rose O’Neill Literary House present the solo exhibition "SmooOOoOoooooOooth Operator: the eternal outlays ennoble and rekindle an unlikely savior," featuring the work of artist and writer Kameelah Janan Rasheed. Rasheed presents photographs, videos, drawings, and prints on various substrates. Together, these works create an evolving ecosystem of Rasheed’s ongoing research into machine learning, its relationship to translation, Islamic mysticism, divination practices, and call-and-response traditions. Program sponsored in part by the Hedgelawn Foundation and Maryland State Arts Council.

In celebration of Black History Month the February exhibit, “Merging Perspectives” will feature both local and regional black artists who work in a broad range of media. To complement the exhibit there will be two additional chances to hear from special artists.
On Saturday, February 4, at 1pm Kyle Hackett will present “Circular Narratives.” Kyle (b. Still Pond) is an artist, professor, and RiverArts Board Member who has returned home to share the influences and autobiographical connections to his artwork and journey.

The Washington College Concert Series presents Lori Kesner (flute) and Maria José Parker (piano). Daydreams of the Flute takes the audience on a musical journey of the flute fantasia repertoire. The program includes a broad range of styles in this free-form genre, including the Baroque Fantasies of Telemann, the gypsy-inspired Airs Valaques, the dance-themed Fantasía para un gentilhombre (Rodrigo) and Tango Fantasia (Gade), as well as favorites from the opera cannon: Fantaisie brillante sur ‘Carmen’ and Rigoletto-Fantaisie.

The Mainstay is observing the flavor and excitement of Mardi Gras on a special Fat Tuesday (February 21st) 7 P.M. show. Philadelphia-based James Day and the Fish Fry perform all styles of New Orleans Music: A Gumbo mix of Street Parade music, Cuban Rumbas, Swamp Pop, Zydeco, and New Orleans Classics. It’s all there in the pot: backbeat drumming, slapping upright bass, fat tone guitar, squeezing accordion, honking saxophone, scratchy frottoir, Cajun fiddle and ripping harmonica.

The Mainstay is pleased to welcome the dynamic father and son team of Ken and Brad Kolodner and their quartet for a night of bluegrass, and old-timey music. Their popular performances capture a unique, personal, and captivating soundscape that reveals a passion for traditional music. Ken Kolodner is regarded as one of the most influential hammered dulcimer players in North America. The hypnotizing groove of his percussive hammered dulcimer, along with his son’s rhythmic clawhammer banjo and the group's seamless 3-part harmonies, give their bluegrass material a signature sound.

The class will be held at the Clay Studio from 6 - 8:30 pm on Tuesdays, running from February 28th through April 4th. (6 weeks)
This course introduces basic pottery wheel techniques to beginning students with a focus on throwing bowl and cylinder forms. Students will be shown the step-by-step process of wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing clay into finished pieces. Class time and the encouraged Open Studio practice time will enable students to create at their own level and improve their skills with clay.
